WIND VANE self-steering - how we use ours when sailing
Просмотров 2,6 тыс.3 месяца назад
A tutorial on how we set up our wind vane self-steering, servo-pendulum system to our tiller, and how it works. Sailing with this system ensures we don't put strain on our batteries and is our hardest working crew member. Our learn to sail series, sailing for beginners, is available in our channel, check it out. Check out our earlier release covering the various wind vane systems: ruclips.net/v...

thanks for the info, much appreciated
beautiful and details...perfect for noob like me
what great comments, thanks so much
Just what I've been looking for; practical explanation of sail shape.
much appreciated, and thanks for watching
First thing to learn is how to splice your main brace
Green is starboard right not forward
correct...
Sorry, the dizzy spinning and terrible sound stopped me. Thank you for the hard work anyway. Would you consider editing this again? Thank you.

Awesome easy description, thanks!
thanks a lot, much appreciated
I would have learned if I could have heard you clearly, but the waves were to loud. Sorry, I can't give you a thumbs up on this one because of that.
understood, beginner's mistakes...This video has been updated with enhanced graphics and improved sound, check it out: ruclips.net/video/tRgWtPaCQQc/видео.html

Great video!
the stern line should be led to the aft bit on the dock cleat
yes, you are correct, small oversight on my part as our stern overshoots the dock and we have no choice but to tie up as such
@@searchingforcoconuts2248 That makes sense. I was referring to the diagram at 2:05. General recommendation is to lead a dock line (whether stern, bow, spring or breast) to the far bit of the dock cleat, wherever possible
Very informative video ,thanks🎉❤
thanks so much for watching and adding such great comments
Hey Derek, we just got our first boat, (for free)! She's a Lotus 25 & guess what? She's called Nicole Lol. Having now sorted all the running rigging, (Thanks to your tutorials), we now have to sort a holding tank because we are on the lakes in Sweden whilst we learn how to sail, so this is perfect. Love your sense of humour Kiki & Ian
Amaaaazing, Nicole will never let you down 😂😂 yeah I guess in Sweden you don't have a choice regarding holding tank, but we are so happy we installed ours... Updates please, and thanks for watching
@@searchingforcoconuts2248 Will definitely give you updates once we take her out, this last 4 weeks has been replacing things & talking lots with the owner of our local chandler about the various options we have in setting her up, we also have a week booked with a local sailing club for lessons in the 1st week of July. I commented to help you guys out with the algorithm because I was suprised you don't have more subscribers considering the thorough tutorials you provide, just one question for now... Found any coconuts yet? Lol Fair winds
@@kikikirk 😂😂 found many coconuts, but never enough 😂😂 thanks for the help with comments, always appreciated. We continue to grow so we are happy as such. Enjoy the lessons
The distracting water sound is F-ing stupid!

Thanks!
Thanks so much, very kind of you and much appreciated
These vids are great! The renderings could be lightened a little. Kinda' dark. But great! Keep at it.
Thanks so much, will work on lighting
It's not very easy to understand he's making it a lot more complicated with unclear and overly confusing graphics as well
thank you, your comments are noted
Excellent explanation. Thank you
thanks so much, great feedback
Where is the sailing?
This is exceptionally well done. Clear. Easy to follow. Great visuals. Thank you.
awesome response, thanks so much
This video is great! (but the audio needs help) Thanks!

Make one for jib travelers, please.
If you mean, self-tacking jibs, then yes, maybe one day... We cover the jib traveler in our sail trim video, check it out ruclips.net/video/x6XOKA_DkOw/видео.html
This video is excellent. However I am confused because some commentators use the terms 'Hydrovane' or Windvane' systems which seems to imply they are different systems!!!! So my question Is; Is using the term 'Hydrovane' or 'Windvane' one and the same???
thanks for watching and your amazing feedback, much appreciated. A wind vane is actually a system for showing from which direction the wind is blowing from, or any apparatus affected by the wind. I guess the correct term would be a wind vane self-steering system. Hydro refers to water so not sure how that fits in. Then some refer to the systems according to brand names, such as "Wind Pilot". While there are variations in design, they all perform the same function, keeping the vessel on a course in relation to the apparent wind. Hope this helps, thanks again
@@searchingforcoconuts2248 Thank you. Yes I think Hydrovane is a manufacturer but it is still a windvane steering system. I am clear now.
The brilliant explanations helped me understand some "hidden" sailing issues. Thanks!
Nice NBJS shirt ! ❤ Greetings from Germany ! 🇩🇪
😂😂awesome, thanks for watching
2:30 This entire animation sequence is wrong. The line is going to the wrong ear of that cleat. In one section, it's simply impossible that the line will hold at all. You absolutely MUST rework that animation. Terrible.
The line is not around the ear of the cleat, it's passing through the mid eye
@@searchingforcoconuts2248 it isn't. I watched for that specifically. Watch again. In any case, at least it's unclear, Which is the death nell for instructive animations
@@searchingforcoconuts2248 watch especially at 2:56. The line is looping first around the NEAR ear. Very wrong
Apologies, your original comment made reference to 2:30... Moving on to 2:56, if I was doing an instructional on how to tie up, then yes, I would need to have it around the far ear, and will need to amend the clip. Your comments could lead to viewers researching the finer points of OXO and that's a good thing. This particular line you are referring to is not meant to keep the boat from forward movement, that's what the spring line will do. This is to prevent the stern from moving off. In my opinion, if you take a look at the view from above, the angle is not so wide that you could say the line will not hold. Anyway, any discussion is good discussion and could potentially help someone else.
@@searchingforcoconuts2248 good answer. 👍
